The Rebbetzin’s Handwriting on Her Husband’s Tehillim
“This Tehillim belonged to my late husband, of blessed memory, which I sent to him at his request during his exile in the village of ‘Chili’ in the region of Kazakhstan.
If these pages could speak, they would have much to recount—an endless amount. Every single page was constantly soaked in tears, and they were always damp from them. From the day he was arrested and imprisoned in March 1939, his physical strength declined steadily, worsening day by day. His spirit, however, remained strong.
It was incredibly painful to hear the cries that came from the depths of his heart, filled with profound heartbreak. His suffering stemmed more from the deprivation of spiritual life than from the physical hardships—hunger, literal starvation without bread, and the other terrible conditions of life.
This book remained with him until the day of his death, on the 20th of Av, 1944, in Alma-Ata, the capital city of the aforementioned region. Through the immense efforts of loyal friends, whose work on his behalf was carried out with self-sacrifice and great personal danger, they succeeded in obtaining permission for my husband, Levi Yitzchak, of blessed memory, to transfer from the village to the larger city. This move improved his situation in every respect—both physically and spiritually. Most importantly, there was a Jewish community there.
May God remember the good deeds of these individuals and protect them from all harm. Amen.”
