We are deeply saddened to report on the passing of Rabbi Shalom Ber Lipskar, the Rebbe’s Shliach to Bal Harbour, Florida, and founder of the Aleph Institute. He passed away on Shabbos, 5 Iyar, 5785.
He was 78 years old.
Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to his parents, Rabbi Eli and Rochel Lipskar. After WWII, he was smuggled out of Russia to a DP camp in Germany during the great escape of Chabad Chassidim in 5706 (1946).
Rabbi Lipskar’s family eventually settled in Toronto, Canada. He learned in the original Lubavitch Yeshiva in Toronto, and then in 770.
After marrying Chani (née Minkowitz), they were sent by the Rebbe on shlichus to the Chabad elementary school in Miami Beach, where he was principal of the school. He later founded the Yeshivah Gedolah in South Beach.
In 5741, Rabbi Lipskar founded the Aleph Institute, which is a national education and humanitarian nonprofit, to support Jewish inmates, military personnel, and their families across the United States
At the same time, he founded The Shul of Bal Harbour on Collins Avenue, which turned into one of South Florida’s most vibrant Jewish communities.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Chani Lipskar, and children, Rabbi Zalman Lipskar and Mrs. Devorah Leah Andrusier.
He is also survived by his siblings, Rabbi Mendel Lipskar (Johannesburg, South Africa), Rabbi Yossi Lipskar (Miami Beach, FL), and Mrs. Sheva Schochet (South Beach, FL).
The levaya will begin at the Shul of Bal Harbor on Sunday at 9:00 am. The levaya will pass 770 at 2:30 pm, followed by burial near the Ohel at 3:30 pm.
