Hundreds of shluchim and members of Anash from around the world are preparing to travel to Alma Ata for Chof Menachem Av, the yahrtzeit of the gaon and mekubal Harav Levi Yitzchak Schneerson zt”l, the Rebbe’s father.
A large crowd is also expected from Eretz Yisrael for this special day, and the organizing committee is preparing a complete hospitality package to ensure all guests are fully cared for physically—so they can focus on the ruchniyus of the day: davening, learning, visiting the tziyun, and studying the teachings of the baal hahilulah.
In a special initiative, the organizers are offering a $500 subsidy toward travel expenses for every shliach and shluchah coming for the yahrtzeit.
The Rebbe regarded the yahrtzeit of his father as a uniquely significant day. The Rebbe would serve as chazzan for all the tefillos, and would often hold a farbrengen, sometimes concluding with a hadran on a masechta of Shas. Ahead of Chof Av 5744, the Rebbe published a michtavklali letter, to which he added a few handwritten lines about his father, including the now-famous words:
“Upon me lies the great obligation and merit to request… that people learn from his Torah during a farbrengen and give tzedakah on this day for the elevation of his soul.”
The committee is expecting hundreds of guests—men and women—and is arranging full hospitality, including transportation between airport, hotel, and the tziyun, and a comfortable, air-conditioned space in the cemetery for learning and writing panim. There will be organized tefillos and shiurim for men and women, in Hebrew, English, and Russian—ensuring both gashmiyus and ruchniyus are fully covered.
“There is no doubt,” say the organizers, “that taking care of the physical and spiritual needs of those traveling in honor of the baal hahilulah brings nachas to his son, the Rebbe, and with Hashem’s help, everything will be arranged in the most beautiful and fitting manner.”
