The new regional slow zones will cover Dumbo, Broad Channel, St. George, and all of City Island—areas that have seen multiple severe traffic injuries in recent years. The city will notify community boards this month, with a 60-day public comment period before the changes take effect.
While city officials insist that reducing speed limits will save lives, many argue the approach is ineffective without stronger enforcement. A frequent city commuter—called the 20 mph limit impractical and unnecessary, suggesting that better policing of reckless driving would do more to prevent crashes than arbitrarily lowering speed limits.
Despite the pushback, the city plans to expand speed reductions to 250 locations by 2025, prioritizing school zones and high-risk areas. Under Sammy’s Law, speeds could drop even further—to 10 mph—in some areas undergoing safety redesigns.
