NYC: NYPD Unveils Stricter Vehicle Pursuit Guidelines
The NYPD announced new restrictions on vehicle pursuits, aiming to reduce risks to officers and the public. Starting February 1, 2025, officers will only engage in pursuits for serious and violent crimes, such as felonies and violent misdemeanors. Chases for traffic infractions, violations, or non-violent misdemeanors will no longer be permitted • Read More
The policy emphasizes safety, limiting pursuits near schools, playgrounds, and densely populated areas. Supervisors will oversee chases, with the authority to terminate them if risks outweigh benefits. Officers will not face discipline for ending pursuits over safety concerns.
In 2024, the NYPD reported 2,278 vehicle pursuits, with 25% resulting in collisions or injuries. Over two-thirds stemmed from individuals fleeing routine car stops, many of which will no longer qualify for pursuit under the new rules.
“This revised policy strikes a critical balance, ensuring public safety while minimizing unnecessary risks,” said Chief of Department John Chell.
The department will introduce mandatory training, monthly reviews, and annual reports to enforce compliance and evaluate the policy’s effectiveness.
