In a move aimed at attracting more volunteers to the state’s understaffed fire and emergency response departments, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation granting a 10% tax exemption to volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel, including Hatzalah volunteers.

The bill, which was designed to provide an incentive for men and women to protect their communities, is just one of several initiatives being pursued by the Fire Fighters Association of the State of NY to encourage volunteering.

Despite the widespread belief that most fire and emergency response services are paid, the majority are actually provided by volunteers, according to John D’Alessandro, Association Secretary for the Fire Fighters Association of the State of NY.

In addition to the tax break, the association also offers college tuition reimbursement and is exploring other ways to incentivize volunteering. As the demand for emergency services continues to increase and costs rise, the need for volunteers has become more pressing, yet few are willing to take on the responsibility.
