New Sefer Torah Brings Protection to Kedem Community in Kyiv

A special, restored Sefer Torah was dedicated in the Kedem community of Kyiv, to serve as a source of protection, salvation, and unity for the members of the community, for the Jews of Ukraine, and for Jews around the world • Read More, Photos

Rabbi Pinchas Vishdetsky, rabbi of the Kedem community, shared that the initiative was born approximately a year and a half after the outbreak of the severe emergency situation in Ukraine. The idea emerged through reflection on the words of the Navi Daniel, as explained by The Rebbe, that in times of danger, salvation comes through those who are “written in the book.” “בעת ההיא יימלט עמך – כל אשר נמצא כתוב בספר”.

“We were searching for a meaningful spiritual act,” Rabbi Vishdetsky explained, “one that would bring protection and deliverance, especially for those in need of rescue from captivity.”

With remarkable Divine Providence, an ancient and unique parchment reached the community—one that itself required restoration. After careful repair and renewal, it was transformed into the community’s new Sefer Torah.

The dedication was made possible through the generosity of the Vasilevsky family, who donated the Sefer Torah in memory of the women of their family. During the years of Communist persecution, these courageous women preserved Jewish life, raised families committed to Torah and Mitzvos, and strengthened Judaism under the most difficult conditions.

The Hachnasas Sefer Torah was held with the participation of hundreds of community members and honored guests. The writing of the final letters was accompanied by deep emotion, followed by joyful dancing and celebration.

Among those in attendance were members of the Ukrainian parliament, the head and deputy head of the Podilskyi District administration, longtime friends of the community, and Member of Parliament Olga Vasilevska.

The evening concluded with a festive Seudas Mitzvah, joyous song, and a strong sense of faith, with the hope that this Sefer Torah, restored and returned to its sacred role, will be a source of protection, strength, and redemption for the Jewish people.
