Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is expected to visit Chevron about a week and a half before the September 17, 2019 election for 22nd Knesset.

While the timing is close to the election, officially, the Prime Minister will not be visiting to campaign, but to take part in the ceremony marking 90 years since the 1929 (תרפט) massacre in the holy city, in which almost 70 Yidden, HY”D, were slaughtered by rioting Arabs.

Many others were left seriously wounded, some permanently maimed, as Jewish homes were looted, and shuls ransacked.

Over the years, there have been tensions between Netanyahu and the Jewish community of Chevron, as the community demands access to the entire Ma’aras HaMachpelah, including the Yitzchak Hall, as well other issues including the government’s continued opposition to the expansion of the Jewish community.

The community also demands that the marketplace, which is on Jewish land, be returned to them, an area they explain has been taken over by area Arabs.

Chevron is the base of some of the leaders of Otzma Yehudit, Baruch Marzel and Itamar Ben-Gvir, who remain harsh critics of Netanyahu’s policies vis-à-vis the PA (Palestinian Authority) and the Jewish community’s expansion.
