MTA to End MetroCard Sales by End of 2025
The MTA announced that it will stop selling and refilling MetroCards by the end of 2025, expediting the transition to the OMNY tap-and-go payment system • Read More
MetroCards, in use since 1994, were originally set to be phased out by 2027, but the MTA has moved up its timeline. While existing cards will still be accepted until 2027, riders will no longer be able to purchase or refill them after 2025.
The shift poses challenges for Orthodox Jewish communities and other New Yorkers who rely on MetroCards, especially those who do not use smartphones or digital payment methods. OMNY requires tapping a phone, credit card, or OMNY card, which must be purchased and managed online—a barrier for those who avoid internet use.
The move has sparked concerns in neighborhoods like Borough Park, Williamsburg, and Crown Heights, where MetroCards remain a vital means of transportation. Community leaders are urging the MTA to provide alternative solutions to ensure accessibility for all riders.
