The FJC Or Avner “Perlina” Jewish School in Kyiv marked Tu BiShvat with a meaningful tree-planting ceremony on February 13, demonstrating the community’s resilience and commitment to Jewish education. The celebration held particular significance this year, as it took place at the recently restored school building, which had previously sustained damage from a drone strike.
Chief Rabbi of Kyiv, Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch, led the ceremony, emphasizing the profound symbolism of planting trees during challenging times. “Each tree we plant represents our unwavering faith in life and the future,” Rabbi Markovitch shared.
The event drew wide diplomatic support, with seven ambassadors and nine consuls from various countries joining the celebration. Their presence highlighted the international community’s solidarity with Kyiv’s Jewish community.
Following the tree-planting ceremony, participants gathered for a traditional Tu BiShvat Seder, where they enjoyed the symbolic fruits mentioned in the Torah. The celebration continued with eco-themed workshops, allowing students to deepen their connection with nature through hands-on activities.
The day concluded with special performances by “Perlina” students, who expressed their love for nature and aspirations for peace through music and dance.
