Air France is under fire after serving fake kosher meals to a family traveling from Mauritius to Paris, a scandal first reported by DansDeals.
According to Divora Marinelli, a DansDeals reader who shared her experience on the DansDeals Forums (DDF), her family of eight had pre-ordered kosher meals for their 12-hour flight. However, upon checking in, they were told that no kosher meals were available.
Once in the air, flight attendants presented them with meals labeled “KSML,” the standard airline code for kosher meals. But Marinelli quickly realized something was wrong. “The flight attendant had merely taken a regular meal and written KSML on it and told them it was their kosher meal.”
She rushed to warn her family, but by then, some of her children had already started eating. When her son directly asked a flight attendant if the meal was kosher, they falsely assured him that it was.
Upon confronting the lead flight attendant, Marinelli learned that another crew member had simply scribbled “KSML” onto the meals to pass them off as kosher. The lead attendant filed a report, but Air France only compensated the family with a €30 voucher per personand did not commit to retraining staff or addressing the incident further.
“If this were a nut allergy situation, Air France would have a major PR disaster and lawsuit on its hands. Should kosher meals be different?” asked DansDeals in their report.
Attempts to contact Air France for comment have been met with silence. The airline has not responded to repeated requests for clarification on whether it will take disciplinary action or improve training regarding kosher meals.
This is not the first time an airline has been caught misleading Jewish travelers about kosher food. In 2018, Wow Air falsely claimed its in-flight meals were kosher, despite lacking proper certification.
For kosher travelers, this serves as a stark reminder to always check that airline meals are factory-sealed with proper kosher certification.
Be sure to keep your eyes open for fake kosher meals!
