In nineteen eighty, 5740, Kollel Tifereth Zekainim was founded by the Lubavitcher Rebbe MH”M in memory of his father, the saintly Rabbi Levi Yitzchok, of blessed memory, with the objective of serving the needs of our seniors, strengthening their connection to their Jewish heritage. Our staff is dedicated not just to helping care for those in need, but to stimulating and bringing out the inherent treasures of our seniors.

As the population matures, there is more and more attention being granted to the special needs of elders. The Rebbe is on the forefront of the battle to empower seniors. He is striving to dispel the old stereotype of the frail old man. Elders have had the opportunity to learn from life’s experiences. They are a source whom to seek counsel, role models strive to emulate. The latter years of life need not be a time of retirement a time of continued contribution time to focus on the higher the study of Torah and fulfill in a complete way.

At present, the Kollel serves thousands of seniors, men and women, senior centers and Health-related facilities. In addition, we established a yeshiva-style learning program for the elder Scholars in the Chabad community of Crown Heights. We are fortunate to have a growing staff of talented volunteers on our men and women.

Kollel Tifereth Zekainim provides thought-provoking classes in both English and Yiddish for people of varying backgrounds. Subjects include Chumash, Talmud, Jewish law and Chabad Chassidic philosophy.

Cultural programs are also provided for the seniors, such as group discussions, presentations and displays. Other special programs include cantorial appearances and musical entertainment by professionals. Much to the delight of the seniors, groups of children from schools or youth groups are periodically brought to visit them or to perform for them. Special events are also scheduled for all the Jewish festivals, creating a deeper understanding and feeling for the richness of the upcoming yom tov and bringing merit to others by helping them increase their observance of the holidays.

Before Pesach every year, model seders are held. Parties are made for Chanukah and Purim, bringing the seniors tremendous joy and happiness. On Rosh Hashanah we bring the mitzvah of hearing the shofar to others, and during Sukkos, we visit the elderly and help them with the mitzvah of lulav and esrog. In preparation for the various holidays throughct year, brochures are printed and distributed.
