According to the FSB, when security forces arrived to arrest him, a shootout ensued, ultimately resulting in the terrorist’s death. It was later revealed that he was a foreign national from a Central Asian Muslim country.
The official statement indicates that the suspect had conducted extensive surveillance on both the synagogue and the metro station he intended to target. A search of his residence uncovered materials purchased from fertilizer stores, which he planned to use to assemble explosives. His ultimate plan was to flee to Afghanistan after carrying out the attacks.
Jewish community leaders in Moscow, speaking on behalf of Russia’s Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Berel Lazar, expressed their gratitude to the special security forces for preventing a major tragedy, acknowledging divine providence. They added: “Unfortunately, terrorist tactics are becoming increasingly cruel and insidious. The efforts of the special security forces are crucial in ensuring the safety and protection of civilians. However, even though their evil plans were thwarted, these criminals still manage to instill fear and confusion. Our response, as Jewish communities, must be to strengthen our commitment to Torah, good deeds, and increasing spiritual light, which will ultimately bring goodness to all of society.”
