The airline aims to operate four weekly flights from Tel Aviv to Newark Liberty International Airport. This comes as US carriers remain suspended due to security concerns and El Al faces a price-gouging investigation.
Israir is leasing wide-body aircraft for the route, marking its first direct service to New York. The airline, which currently operates only eight planes, will lease planes and crews from a foreign airline to meet demand for this popular route from Ben-Gurion International Airport.
Founded in 1989, Israir is owned by the Rami Levy Group, best known for its discount supermarkets. Israir primarily serves domestic flights to Eilat and European destinations. The new New York route is awaiting US regulatory approval.
US-based airlines, including United and American Airlines, have suspended flights to Israel indefinitely, while Delta plans to resume service in April. Travelers have faced high prices on El Al for direct flights, while some rely on connecting flights via Europe.
The Israeli Transportation Ministry is also working to amend laws requiring foreign airlines to compensate passengers for canceled flights due to the war, aiming to protect passengers’ rights while reducing uncertainties for airlines during wartime.
