Israel’s Chief Rabbi Brings Chizuk to Ukraine’s Jewish Communities
Israel’s Chief Rabbi, Harav Kalman Ber, together with outgoing Minister of Religious Services Rabbi Michael Malchieli, visited Ukraine for the first time since the war began. Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Kalman Ber, together with Minister of Religious Services Rabbi Michael Malchieli, returned to Israel after a special visit to strengthen the Shluchim and Jewish communities in Ukraine. This marked the first visit of Israel’s Chief Rabbi to the war-torn country since the outbreak of hostilities more than three and a half years ago. They were joined by Rabbi Pinchas Althaus of Holon, representing the Shluchim.
The central stop of the trip was in Dnipro, known as the “capital of Ukrainian Jewry” and home to the Menorah Center, the world’s largest Jewish community complex. There, the delegation met with community leaders, city and regional officials, and were inspired by the vibrant Jewish life led by Rabbi Shmuel Kaminetsky. Rabbi Ber was honored with writing the first letter in a new Sefer Torah dedicated by a local Jew.
Despite the hardships of war, the Chief Rabbi praised the Shluchim’s extensive network of schools, synagogues, and welfare institutions, noting that he left Ukraine “more strengthened than he came to strengthen.” Ukrainian officials lauded the Jewish community’s contribution to the region and expressed hope for continued strong ties with Israel.
Rabbi Meir Stambler, Chairman of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Ukraine, welcomed the visit as “an important show of support” for both the Jewish community and Ukraine at large.
