The remains of the aircraft, which went down due to poor weather while on a rescue mission, were located last week on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.
The wreckage was returned to Israel this past weekend, and the families of the six airmen who perished in the crash on April 27, 1974, have been informed, according to a report by Israel’s Channel 12 News on Sunday.
Israeli forces have maintained defensive positions on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon since Syrian President Bashar Assad was ousted by rebels. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Israel will continue to hold its position on the strategic plateau until a new arrangement is reached.
