IDF Repeatedly Pressuring Religious Girls with Exemptions Through Persistent Recruitment Messages

The IDF has been sending numerous SMS messages to religious and Charedi high school girls—including those from Chabad communities—who have received an official exemption from military service on religious grounds • Full Story

The report, first aired by Chabad journalist Mendy Rizel on Kol Berama radio, reveals that dozens of messages are sent annually, encouraging these young women to reconsider their exemption and explore military service options, particularly in the Air Force and Cyber Defense units.

One of the messages states: “We invite you to reconsider serving in the IDF. If you are interested in learning more (without affecting your current exemption), you may fill out this survey.” Another message emphasizes opportunities in the Cyber and Telecommunications Corps, while a third promotes “significant roles in the Air Force.”

Some of the recipients study in Chabad institutions officially listed as part of the national-religious education system, despite operating as fully Charedi schools. Others belong to the broader national-religious sector.

Parents of affected girls expressed outrage, telling Kol Berama: “This is blatant harassment. One message might be understandable, but receiving these texts every few weeks is unacceptable. The IDF’s conduct shows disregard for our community’s values.”

In response, the IDF did not deny the claims, stating: “These messages were sent to students in national-religious schools, according to Ministry of Education records. Many young women from this background express interest in IDF service. It is important to emphasize that these messages are purely informational, with no obligation or coercion. The IDF is committed to offering various communities the opportunity to serve in ways that align with their lifestyle, including those who have received an exemption or are not obligated to enlist.”

Meanwhile, the Chotam organization, which advocates for Torah-based values in Israel, condemned the practice: “Religious girls and their families feel harassed by the repeated messages, despite having declared their religious status and secured an exemption. These idealistic young women will serve the Jewish people through National Service and by building strong Torah-based homes, as guided by our rabbinic leaders. The IDF must stop pressuring them. We will continue to defend the rights of girls who choose the path of Torah.”
