Leaders of Hungary’s Jewish community are responding cautiously following the election victory of Péter Magyar, who defeated longtime Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in a closely watched national vote.
While expressing hope for continued stability under the incoming leadership, community representatives also voiced strong appreciation for Orbán’s tenure, which they described as a period of unprecedented growth, security, and strong ties with the Jewish community .
In an official statement, the EMIH Jewish community organization highlighted what it called a “golden era” for Hungarian Jewry over the past decade and a half, citing expanded religious life, restored synagogues, and a firm government stance against anti-Semitism. Hungary, they noted, became one of the safest countries in Europe for Jews, particularly in the wake of rising tensions across the continent.
At the same time, community leaders expressed optimism that Magyar will preserve these gains. They emphasized the importance of maintaining security, continuing the fight against anti-Semitism, and upholding Hungary’s close relationship with the Jewish community.
In a personal letter, Rabbi Slomo Köves congratulated Magyar on his victory, while underscoring the responsibility of leadership and expressing hope that Hungary will remain a place where Jewish life can continue to thrive safely and openly.
