Hamas Leader Targeted in Israeli Strike on Gaza Bunker
The Israel Defense Forces and Israel Security Agency confirmed Tuesday that a high-level airstrike targeted Mohammad Sinwar, the Hamas leader in Gaza and head of the group’s militant wing, in a bunker beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis • Read More
The strike, described by Israeli officials as “precise,” was carried out against an underground Hamas command and control center located beneath the hospital in southern Gaza. It remains unconfirmed whether Sinwar was killed in the operation, but Israeli defense sources say early assessments suggest the strike was successful.
Mohammad Sinwar is the brother of Yahya Sinwar, the former Hamas leader and architect of the October 7th massacre in Israel. Yahya Sinwar was eliminated by Israeli forces in October 2024 after months on the run.
According to news reports, Israeli officials did not notify the United States prior to the strike. The operation coincided with U.S. President Donald Trump’s arrival in the region for the US-Saudi Investment Forum in Riyadh.
In a statement, the IDF emphasized that “numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians and civilian infrastructure, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and additional intelligence.” Footage released by the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit late Tuesday showed the aftermath of the strike and the destruction of Hamas’s subterranean infrastructure beneath the hospital.
“The Hamas terrorist organization continues to use hospitals in the Gaza Strip for terrorist activity, demonstrating its cynical and brutal use of the civilian population in the hospital and its surroundings,” the IDF said.
