Governor Hochul Announces NYPD Officers on Every Overnight Subway Train to Tackle Violence
In response to rising transit violence, Governor Kathy Hochul announced a new plan to increase police presence in the subway system, with NYPD officers assigned to every overnight train for the next six months • Full Article
Beginning in the coming weeks, two officers will be posted on every subway train running overnight, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. The goal is to improve safety and prevent crime, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “The most effective way to prevent crime and make people feel safe is to assign more police resources to the subway system,” she said in a statement.
While the plan marks a significant shift in approach to subway safety, the details on funding and costs remain unclear. This proposal comes amid ongoing concerns about violence in the subway system, following high-profile incidents such as the fatal attack on a passenger aboard a Brooklyn train in December.
In addition to the police surge, Hochul also outlined plans for more extensive subway safety measures, including funding to install platform barriers in 100 stations and upgrading lighting at every stop. However, these proposals are part of the MTA’s broader $33 billion capital plan, which faces a significant funding gap and remains uncertain.
Mayor Eric Adams emphasized that while no single measure will completely eliminate subway violence, a combination of efforts will work together to reduce it. “There are many rivers that feed the sea of violence,” he explained, “and you have to dam each one of them.”
