The school, a longstanding institution in the Georgian capital, operates under the auspices of the Federation of Jewish Communities (FJC). Unlike many other countries in the former Soviet Union, Georgia traditionally begins its school year in mid-September.
During the festive ceremony, Ambassador Meitzad warmly addressed the students and their families, wishing them a successful and meaningful school year. Additional greetings were offered by Hadas Cohen, Israel’s Consul in Georgia; the Deputy Mayor of Tbilisi; the Director of Education for the city’s municipality; and the Chabad emissaries to Georgia, Rabbi Meir and Rebbetzin Tzipi Kozlovsky, the founders and directors of the city’s Jewish educational institutions.
In their speeches, the speakers emphasized the significance of the ‘Or Avner’ Jewish school in Tbilisi as the only Jewish school in Georgia, a country with an ancient Jewish history. Especially now, as the connection to Jewish heritage and tradition brings the Jewish community’s growth and promotes Jewish identity among the youth. In addition, the building of the new Jewish kindergarten was mentioned, which will soon be ready and contribute to the growing young community.
“The beginning of each new school year, “Says Rabbi Meir, “is a deeply emotional and joyous time for both us and the students. Here at the school, we grow alongside our students, strengthening our Jewish pride and deepening our connection to a heritage that spans thousands of years.”
