Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar arrived in Chișinău, Moldova, for a historic visit, leading the inauguration of Israel’s first permanent embassy in the country. He met with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean, and Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi to strengthen political and economic ties.
Sa’ar also met with Chabad Shluchim and Jewish community leaders, including Chief Rabbi and Shliach Mendel Axelrod, expressing deep appreciation for their work. Rabbi Axelrod presented him with a biographical book about The Rebbe.
As part of his visit, Sa’ar laid a wreath at the Chișinău Ghetto Holocaust memorial, emphasizing its historical significance.
“Moldova is a true friend of Israel, and the time has come to strengthen our ties,” Sa’ar stated.
Israel recognized Moldova’s independence in 1991, but only now is opening a permanent embassy—a step Sa’ar initiated in December 2024.
Rabbi Zusha Abelsky, Chairman of Moldova’s Jewish community, welcomed the move: “This will enhance cooperation with Israel and strengthen support for local Jews and visitors alike.”
