For the First Time: Freed Hostage Puts On Tefillin with Rabbi Lazar
This morning, the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Rabbi Berel Lazar, visited Alexander “Sasha” Trupunov, who was released yesterday after 498 days in captivity by the brutal Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza. During the emotional visit, Sasha had the opportunity to lay tefillin for the first time in his life • Full Story, Photos
Rabbi Lazar gifted him a new, high-quality pair of Tefillin, along with a Chitas (Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya), personalized with his name engraved on the cover and case.
Sasha’s mother, Yelena, expressed deep gratitude for the extensive efforts made on behalf of Sasha and his family throughout the difficult year and a half. His release marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in the Russian Jewish community’s tireless efforts to secure his and his family’s freedom.
Sasha was kidnapped on Simchas Torah by Hamas, along with several of his family members, including his grandmother, who was a well-known and active participant in the Chabad synagogue in Rostov, Russia.
At the onset of the crisis, Rabbi Lazar personally appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who took direct action and played a key role in securing the release of Sasha’s family members several months ago. His continued involvement ultimately contributed to Sasha’s own release.
This morning’s visit was a powerful and emotional moment, culminating in Sasha’s first-ever Tefillin wrapping and the special gift from the Russian Jewish community. Tears of joy filled the room, especially in the eyes of his devoted mother, who demonstrated unwavering faith and strength throughout the ordeal. Alongside her family, she has taken meaningful steps in strengthening her commitment to Torah and mitzvos, and today, Sasha joined in this journey with his first mitzvah of laying tefillin.
The Russian Jewish community, along with Rabbi Lazar and his family, will continue to support and accompany the Trupunov family as they rebuild their lives.
