FAA Slashes Flights at Newark Airport Amid Staffing Crisis and Equipment Issues

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a major reduction in the number of flights at Newark Liberty International Airport due to ongoing runway construction, staffing shortages, and equipment issues that have caused widespread travel disruptions in recent weeks • Read More

Effective immediately, the number of arriving and departing flights will be limited to just 56 per hour, down from over 80, until June 15. On Saturdays, that limit will remain in place through the end of the year, while from Sunday to Friday, the cap will be raised slightly to 68 flights per hour, but only until October 25.

The FAA said the cuts are necessary to manage delays and safety concerns as the busy New Jersey hub grapples with limited runway capacity and a reduced number of air traffic controllers. Newark has long been one of the most congested airports in the nation, handling international-level traffic on a relatively small footprint.

“Our goal is to relieve the substantial inconvenience to the traveling public from excessive flight delays due to construction, staffing challenges, and recent equipment issues,” said Acting FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau. “These delays often cascade across the entire National Airspace System.”

Aviation experts widely support the move, calling it a necessary step to restore order and safety after weeks of delays and cancellations that left travelers stranded and frustrated.

The FAA added that it will consider increasing the number of flights if conditions improve in the coming months.
