Urgent Call from the Lubavitcher Rebbe for the Security of the People of Israel
On the 28th of Nissan, 5750 (April 23, 1990), The Lubavitcher Rebbe issued a special public call, urging an increase in Torah study, prayer, and charity in light of reports of terrorist plans to harm Jews. “The enemies of Israel are plotting undesirable acts, G-d forbid, and certainly their schemes will be nullified and uprooted completely.” • Read More
On the 28th of Nissan, 5750, before Mincha, The Rebbe received a message via his secretary Rabbi Binyomin Klein from Prime Minister Yitzchak Shamir, stating that the PLO was planning to carry out widespread attacks against Jews both in Israel and the diaspora, and that the threats were also personally directed at the Rebbe himself.
After Mincha at the Rebbe’s regular minyan at 3:15 p.m. in the main shul of 770, the Rebbe spoke publicly, and shortly thereafter, the following written call—personally edited by the Rebbe—was published in the press across Israel and the Jewish world:

Public Call from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Shlit”a
In order to increase the blessing, peace, and security of all the Jewish people, wherever they may be, shlit”a—
—Especially in light of reports that the enemies of Israel are plotting undesirable matters, G-d forbid. Surely their plans will be annulled and completely uprooted, and only good will come to the Jewish people—
I suggest and request that every Jewish man, woman, and child add in the following:
-
Torah Study – each person according to their ability.
-
Prayer – the recitation of three chapters of Tehillim; and ideally also the final chapter, which ends with “Let every soul praise G-d, Halleluka.”
-
Charity – the equivalent value of two or three meals (as one would fast instead), to be given to charity at a time of their choosing. Ideally, this charity should go to support Torah learners or institutions that promote Torah education.
May it be G-d’s will that through this, we merit immediately—in this month of Nissan, a month of miracles—the ultimate and true good: the complete and true redemption through our righteous Moshiach.
Personally edited by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Shlit”a.
Note: In the United States, the suggested amount for charity (as ruled by local rabbis) is approximately three dollars per meal.
