Since the eve of Chof Daled Teves, hundreds of Jews arrived in the City of Hadyach (Haditch), in the Poltava Oblast of Ukraine, to celebrate the Yom Hilula of the Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, The Alter Rebbe on that day. About half of the attendees were from cities around Ukraine led by their local Shluchim, the rest arrived from Israel, Europe and the USA after a long journey though Moldova.

The local Shliach Rabbi Shneur Zalman Deitch, who is responsible for the Tzion and guest houses, says that “each year thousands come here on the day of Hilula and I am thrilled to see that despite the war, the Tzion does not remain deserted on this great day. We were logistically prepared ahead of time for the arrival of only 250 people and the large number of guests amazed me. It was challenging, but we managed to organize meals. The war affected us a lot, but we are strong.”

On the morning of the Hilula there were Brisim performed for 7 Jews – the youngest being 29 and the oldest 66 years old – in the nearby shul. The circumcised men arrived accompanied by their rabbi, Rabbi Shlomo Solomon of Kremenchuk. “One of them has been wanting to make a Bris for 20 years but was afraid – and the war made him decide that nothing would stop him,” said the Shliach.

Another Jew, from the city of Myrhorod, came to pray in Tzion with the members of his community and was convinced by Rabbi Moshe Weber, director of the “Kollel Torah” organization, to receive a Bris. After the mitzvah, he performed another mitzvah and put on a tefillin for the first time in his life.

The Brisim, which are considered relatively complex, were done by the Mohel Rabbi David Shlomo Gelber who came especially from Bnei Brak and with the assistance of Mohel and Shliach Rabbi Mendy Cohen from Mariupol, and one of the circumcised, 62-year-old Vladimir Abramenko, asked to be named after the Ba’al hahilula: Schneur Zalman.
