Around the world, thousands of Menorah’s go up in countless cities, in one of the new cities and probably the most interesting is Transnistria, a separatist region of Moldova, which has been claiming independence for 30 years, wants to unite with Russia and is considered the “poorest province in Europe”.

Transnistria ais home to 2000 Jews which is served by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Gotzel, who visits twice a week and travels around the main cities of Transnistria, gives shiurim and helps with humanitarian aid.

This year the head of the This time, Jewish community in Transnistria, Mark Finkelzon obtained permission from the president of Transnistria, Vadim Krasnoselsky, for Chabad to erect a public menorah in Banda, one of the largest city in Transnistria. In past years, due to the relatively closed nature of the Transnistria, no such permits were granted.

The chairman of the Chabad-Jewish community in Moldova Rabbi Zusha Abelsky says that three more events will be held all over Transnistria, in the cities of Tiraspol, Rivnica and Soroka.

In addition, another 15 (!) events will be held for all Moldovan Jews, with the aim of bringing the light of Chanukah to as many Jewish hearts and homes as possible.

According to Rabbi Abelsky, “After a lot of work, we are planning a schedule of festive events in honor of Chanukah. Among them: a Chanukah party for the kindergarten children run by the community and a separate party for the children of the Jewish school. as well as events in the cities of Kahol, Balti, Besarbeka, Komart, Tsimislia, Soroka, Orhei, Brichani, Lipkani, and Dubosari.”
