The population of Israel has seen a significant increase in 2022, with a total of 7,106,000 Jews (73.6%), 2,037,000 Arabs (21.1%), and 513,000 individuals of other denominations currently residing in the country. This marks a significant growth from the previous year, with the population increase being attributed, in part, to a larger number of immigrants in the past 12 months.
According to data from the Jewish Agency, a total of 73,000 new immigrants arrived in Israel during 2022, with 80% of these individuals coming from Russia and Ukraine. Specifically, 37,364 immigrants arrived from Russia, 14,680 from Ukraine, 3,500 from North America (with assistance from Nefesh B’Nefesh), 2,049 from France, 1,993 from Belarus, 1,498 from Ethiopia as part of Operation Tzur Israel, 985 from Argentina, 526 from Great Britain, 426 from South Africa, and 356 from Brazil. It should be noted that final totals for the year 2022 will not be available until after the year has concluded.
The influx of immigrants to Israel has contributed to a total population increase of approximately 204,000 individuals in 2022. This includes 178,000 infants, with 74.8% being born to Jewish mothers and 23.8% being born to Arab mothers. Additionally, approximately 52,000 persons have died, and approximately 4,000 Israelis have left the country for at least a 12-month period.
In commenting on the population growth and immigration trends in Israel, Jewish Agency chairman Doron Almog stated, “It was a dramatic year that emphasized the value of mutual responsibility among the Jewish people, and during which the Jewish Agency helped strengthen the resilience of Jewish communities, empowered weaker populations in Israel, brought tens of thousands of olim [immigrants], saved lives from all over Ukraine and brought them to a safe harbor in Israel.”
