After 20 years of serving the community, there is hope and excitement surrounding a construction site on Ocean Parkway in Kensington.

Rabbi Yehuda Levin says the Chabad Jewish community simply outgrew its old space. So five years ago, Levin says they tore it down.

After facing some obstacles with fundraising, construction has begun at the same address.

The new space will have several upgrades, which include a space for a preschool, playground and a ritual bath, known as a “mikveh.”

“Mikveh is the cornerstone of Judaism and our focus and our uniqueness will be primarily for those that are not typical mikveh-goers, and those that are interested in trying it for the first time,” says Levin.

With enough funding, Levin says the goal is to have the new Chabad Central Brooklyn Community Center completed in a few months.

The nonprofit provides services for teens, families and children in Ditmas Park and Kensington.
