Columbia University is facing an investigation after two janitors, accused the school of retaliating against them following their reports of antisemitic conduct during student protests last year.

Wilson and Torres allege that after witnessing swastikas drawn on the walls of Hamilton Hall, where the protests took place, they reported the incidents to their supervisors. However, they claim their efforts were met with little action and that they were instructed to erase the offensive graffiti themselves. When they sought help from campus security, they were told that the vandals had a right to express themselves under the First Amendment, and nothing could be done to remove the swastikas.

Frustrated by the inaction, Wilson reportedly began removing chalk left in classrooms to prevent further vandalism. Torres, who also tried to intervene, was reportedly reprimanded for his actions by his supervisor. Both janitors claim they were retaliated against for attempting to address the issue.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which enforces federal civil rights laws in the workplace, is now investigating the allegations. Former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr, who is representing the two janitors, supported the investigation, stating that Columbia University has a legal responsibility to protect the rights of its employees.

Columbia University has not yet commented on the investigation or the allegations. The outcome of the investigation could have significant implications for the university’s handling of workplace discrimination and its response to antisemitic conduct on campus.
