The distinguished gathering included Israel’s Chief Rabbis: Rabbi Kalman Bar, Rabbi David Yosef, and Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, as well as all newly elected members of the Chief Rabbinate Council.
A Call to Restore the Fallen Stones
The primary issue discussed was the fate of Western Wall stones that had fallen and were relocated across different sites in Israel. The council strongly asserted that these stones must be returned to the appropriate Genizah, alongside other stones that fell during the destruction of the Second Beis Hamikdash. According to halacha, these stones remain an integral part of the sanctity of the Kotel.
After extensive discussion, the Chief Rabbinate Council issued an official ruling: Any fallen Western Wall stones that have been dispersed must be returned for Geniza. The council emphasized that these stones are not archaeological artifacts but part of the site’s holiness and must be handled accordingly. Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz was given authority to lead the efforts in recovering and preserving them.
A Matter of Sacred Obligation
Presenting the historical background, Rabbi Rabinowitz stated:
“The stones of the Western Wall are not mere historical relics but an inseparable part of its sanctity.”
The council formally appealed to Religious Services Minister Rabbi Michael Malchieli to oversee the implementation of this decision and establish a structured plan for returning the stones.
The meeting concluded with a special prayer for the safety of IDF soldiers, the swift return of hostages, and peace for the Jewish people.
