The minister of Kazakhstan’s Minister of Religious Affairs and Civil Society, Mr. Nurlan Yermekbayev telephoned Chabad Lubavitch of Kazakhstan on the 25th of Cheshvan, the day of Didan Notzach, to notify the Jewish community of Alma Ata that the government will issue legal permits and assistance to put up public Menorahs in honor of Chanukah.

During the past few years there were low level officials who blocked the issuing of permits for a public Menorah. Prime Minister of Israel Mr.  Benjamin Netanyahu visited a few months ago the Chabad House in Astana Kazakhstan and sent a personal letter to the office of the Mayer of Alma Ata to allow the Jewish community to celebrate a public Chanukah Menorah. In his letter Mr. Netanyahu quoted the Rebbe’s words to him to light a candle of truth in the face of darkness.

In response, senior government officials and the Mayor of Alma Ata happily joined forces to ensure the issuing of the proper permits.

Last week the Friends of Chabad Lubavitch of Kazakhstan hosted a VIP delegation from Washington DC of representatives of NCSEJ including Daniel Rubin, Mark Levin, Mindy Stein, Gerald Platt, Larry Magid, Benjamin Cohen and other VIP representatives who met with high level government officials and urged them to expedite the public Menorah permits. A special emphasis was placed on the public Menorah in Alma Ata as it is the city of the heroic self-sacrifice of the Rebbe’s father.

Upon receiving the happy news of the Menorah permits, the Chabad Lubavitch emissaries in Alma Ata began a spontaneous dance of Didan Notzach.
