Chabad at KU Breaks Ground on New 10,000-Square-Foot Facility

Chabad at KU – University of Kansas, led by Rabbi Zalman and Nechama Tiechtel broke ground for a $6 million, 10,000-square-foot building • Full Story, Photos

For 18 years, Rabbi Zalman and Nechama Tiechtel have been pivotal in fostering the Jewish student community at the University of Kansas, known as the Jewhawks. Since their arrival in 2006, they have expanded their initial gatherings from just four students to a vibrant hub that has impacted thousands. Chabad at KU has become a central home for Jewish life on campus, creating lasting relationships and providing essential support.

Due to the growing number of students and the limitations of their current space, the Tiechtels are launching an ambitious project to build a new Chabad House. The planned 10,000-square-foot facility will feature a large lounge, a spacious dining hall, and Lawrence’s first commercial kosher kitchen, designed to accommodate the increasing demand for events and meals. Construction has begun, in August 2024, with completion expected by September 2025.

The groundbreaking ceremony held in September 2024 was a celebratory event, featuring speeches from students and community leaders, and marking the beginning of this significant project. The new Chabad House promises to enhance the student experience, providing a welcoming space for Jewish students to connect, celebrate, and strengthen their heritage. The community eagerly anticipates the new facility, which will ensure that Chabad remains a central, supportive presence for years to come.

May we merit to the ultimate redemption with the coming of Moshiach speedy in our days.
