Ben-Gvir Threatens to Leave Coalition Over “Reckless” Hostage Deal with Hamas
Israel’s Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, announced on Thursday that his party, Otzma Yehudit, would resign from the government if the proposed hostage deal with Hamas is approved. Ben-Gvir criticized the deal, calling it “reckless” and a capitulation to terrorism • Read More
At a press conference, Ben-Gvir outlined his concerns, emphasizing that the deal would involve: • The release of hundreds of convicted terrorists. • Allowing thousands of terrorists to return to northern Gaza. • Withdrawal from the Philadelphi Route. • A ceasefire that he argues would undo the achievements of the ongoing war.
Ben-Gvir stated that the deal would not secure the release of all hostages and warned it could embolden Hamas to carry out further attacks. “The current deal increases Hamas’s appetite and motivation to carry out another massacre like October 7th, thereby repeatedly defeating Israel,” he stated.
He called on other right-wing coalition members, including the Religious Zionist Party, to join Otzma Yehudit in opposing the deal.
Ben-Gvir left open the possibility of returning to the government if the war against Hamas is resumed with clear objectives. He also proposed halting all humanitarian aid to Gaza, including the transfer of fuel, water, and electricity, to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages.
Meanwhile, Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli announced his intention to resign if the deal involves Israel’s withdrawal from the Philadelphi Route.
Prime Minister Netanyahu is reportedly holding discussions with Religious Zionist Party leader Bezalel Smotrich, who is demanding that Israel resume military operations after the deal and halt all humanitarian aid to Gaza.
