Australia Revokes Visa of MK Rothman; Israel Announces Retaliation
Australia has revoked the visa of MK Simcha Rothman, banning him from entering the country for three years. The decision came just a day before he was scheduled to participate in a Jewish community event in Australia • Read More
Australia’s Interior Minister Tony Burke said the government would not permit visitors who promote division. Rothman’s prior remarks on Hamas, a Palestinian state, and Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria were cited as grounds for the cancellation.
Rothman denounced the move as antisemitic, arguing that his positions reflect mainstream Israeli policy and that the decision abandons the Jewish community in Australia at a time of growing hostility.
In retaliation, Foreign Minister Gidon Sa’ar announced that Israel will revoke visas previously granted to Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority, calling it a direct response to Canberra’s actions.
The incident adds to a growing rift between the two countries. In the past year, Australia also revoked the visa of Israeli-American speaker Hillel Fuld and refused entry to former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, both citing political positions critical of a Palestinian state.
