An arson attack at Melbourne’s renowned Adass Shul, one of the most famous in Australia, has left its Jewish community in shock.

At approximately 4:10 a.m. local time, two perpetrators smashed its windows and entered the Shul. They then poured gasoline before setting it ablaze. Baruch Hashem, two people learning inside the shul at the time, who witnessed the incident, were unharmed.

Emergency services responded quickly, but the building and surrounding streets remain closed due to ongoing investigations. The status of the Sifrei Torah remains unclear. The shul features fireproof aron kodesh in its main Shul.

Adass Shul, which sits at the center of the Jewish community, typically hosts minyanim every 30 minutes from Netz until Chatzos serves hundreds of Mispallim daily.

In the meantime, the Yeshiva Gedola (Lubavitch) has graciously opened its mikveh, and the Yeshiva Ketana building is hosting minyanim, including a Cheder Minyan at 7:00 a.m. Despite the disruption, the community is rallying to maintain their Minyan schedules.

“I unequivocally condemn the attack on a Melbourne synagogue early this morning. I have zero tolerance for antisemitism. It has absolutely no place in Australia,” Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said. “This violence and intimidation and destruction at a place of worship is an outrage. This attack has risked lives and is clearly aimed at creating fear in the community.”

He added, “The people involved must be caught and face the full force of the law.”

Authorities are investigating the attack as a hate crime, and CCTV footage is being handed to police.
