Two young professionals without prior yeshiva background completed the entire Talmudic tractate of Makkot at Kyiv’s Kedem community, marking a significant milestone in Jewish learning in Ukraine. The achievement is particularly noteworthy given the ongoing challenges in the region.
Under the guidance of the community Rabbi, Pinchas Vishedski, Chaim Buriak, and Shlomo Bublyniuk maintained a consistent twice-weekly study schedule throughout the crisis period, completing not only the main text but also the classical commentaries of Rashi and Tosafot.
To celebrate this rare accomplishment in Ukraine, especially meaningful during these challenging times, the community held a festive Siyum (completion ceremony) complete with a celebratory gathering and festive meal. The graduates received special certificates amid congratulatory calls from friends, family, and community members.
“The Lubavitcher Rebbe taught us that Torah study is paramount and accessible to every Jew, regardless of their background,” explained Rabbi Vishedski. “One can always begin learning and join in, eventually reaching high levels of understanding and scholarship. Chaim and Shlomo are wonderful proof of this principle.” The Rabbi expressed his pride in their dedication and noted that they have already committed to their next endeavor – studying Tractate Megillah.
