Recently retired IDF Colonel Neriah Yeshurun, who spent decades leading combat officers on the battlefield, found himself in a very different setting this Tu B’Shvat—leading a farbrengen at the Chabad House on the island of Siargao, a popular destination for Jewish backpackers • Read More

Yeshurun joined the Tu B’Shvat Seder hosted by Shluchim Rabbi Mendel and Rivka Spindler, where he served as the keynote speaker. The gathering attracted numerous Israeli travelers, including recently discharged soldiers, who listened intently as Yeshurun shared powerful reflections on the importance of maintaining a connection to the Land of Israel—even when relaxing on the other side of the world.

“Even while unwinding in a remote paradise, it’s essential to remember the greatness of the Land of Israel and our responsibility to work for its betterment,” Yeshurun told the crowd.

Following the event, he described a sense of profound inspiration at seeing Jewish travelers eager to take part in the Chabad House’s activities.

“As someone who has spent years training Israel’s top combat officers, it was incredible to witness another kind of mission—the unwavering dedication of the Chabad Shluchim. Their work is no less important than that of a soldier on the front lines,” he said.

The Tu B’Shvat farbrengen in Siargao served as a reminder that whether in the war room, the battlefield, or a distant island, the Pintele Yid remains unshakable.

The Chabad House in Siargao, led by Rabbi Mendel and Rivka Spindler, serves as a spiritual and communal anchor for Jewish travelers visiting the island. Whether providing kosher meals, hosting inspiring farbrengens, or simply offering a warm Jewish home away from home, the dedicated shluchim ensure that every Jew who walks through their doors feels welcomed, uplifted, and connected to their heritage—even in the most remote corners of the world.
