On the 83rd anniversary of the Babi Yar massacre, Israeli Minister of Culture and Sports, Mr. Miki Zohar, visited the memorial site in Kyiv, Ukraine, to pay his respects to the Jewish victims murdered by the Nazis. He was accompanied by Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch, the Chief Rabbi of Kyiv, Israel’s Ambassador to Ukraine Mr. Michael Brodsky, and KKL Ukraine Chairman Mr. Yonatan Ben-Dor.
Rabbi Markovitch led the prayers with the traditional Kel Maleh Rachamim and recited Kaddish in memory of the victims. Minister Zohar also took part in a briefing about the current efforts of Kyiv’s Jewish community, which focuses on cultural activities, humanitarian aid, Jewish education, and support for children with special needs, especially during the current challenges the country faces.
This visit reflects the ongoing commitment to remembering the atrocities committed at Babi Yar, where over 33,771 Jews were executed in just two days in 1941. The annual commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust and the importance of Holocaust education and memory, even in the midst of contemporary conflicts.
