60 Years After His Execution, Mossad Retrieves Secret Syrian Archive of Legendary Spy Eli Cohen

The covert mission resulted in the transfer of approximately 2,500 items, including highly sensitive Syrian documents, never-before-seen photographs, personal effects, audio recordings, and handwritten letters. Among the most significant recoveries is the original, handwritten will that Cohen penned in his final hours before he was hanged in Damascus in 1965.
The trove, hidden away for decades in Syria, offers new insight into Cohen’s secret life as Israel’s top agent in Damascus, where he successfully infiltrated the highest echelons of the Syrian regime under the alias Kamel Amin Thaabet.
“This is an unprecedented achievement that pays honor to one of Israel’s greatest heroes,” said Mossad Director David Barnea in a statement. “Eli Cohen’s courage and sacrifice saved countless lives. We continue to bring him home, piece by piece.”
The Mossad has not disclosed how or where the operation was carried out, citing national security concerns.
Cohen’s intelligence work is widely credited with giving Israel a decisive advantage in the lead-up to the Six-Day War. Despite repeated pleas, Syria has long refused to return his remains to Israel.
Officials say the newly recovered archive will be examined by Israeli intelligence, and parts of it may be displayed at a later date in coordination with Cohen’s family.
