The Naming Committee of the Bnei Brak Municipality approved today the proposal of Yaakov Wieder, chairman of the Likud faction in the city and a member of the council, to honor the Rebbe MH”M and Horav Ovadia Yosef by naming after them streets in the city.
Wieder has been leading a stubborn struggle over the issue for quite some time and has raised the issue several times during council sessions, arguing that the Jewish people’s greats deserve to be commemorated in the city and that this issue should be devoid of all and any political considerations.
After the court ordered his appointment as a member of the municipal naming committee last year, Wieder publicly announced that since Bnei Brak did not give a place of honor to the Rebbe and Horav Yosef, unlike most Israeli cities, he would oppose any procedure that did not include redress.
Today, as stated, the committee approved Wieder’s proposal by a large majority and it will be submitted later for approval by the city council plenum.
Wider made noter at the conclusion of the debate that he “thanks the thousands of residents who strengthened and supported us. Without you, this tremendous achievement would not have happened”, he added that there is still long obstacles ahead until the proposal is finally approved by the city council. “Nevertheless, we are on the side of justice and fairness. This is why we were victorious and will continue to win!”
