The Rebbe’s reply to an activist who wanted to speak to the Rebbe but the Rebbe felt it would be time wasted because of the former’s history of inaction:
לא איש דברים אנכי. ובמילא דיבורים נעמן מיר – במדה שהם נמשכים אח”כ [= אחר כך] בפועל. ובהתבונני שבוע אחר שבוע במשך ששה חדשים רצופים באופן עבודתו – למרות מה שזה משך שנים שמבטיחני ולמרות שידע שהנני על אתר – מובנים הספקות. וע”פ [= ועל פי] האמור בשיחתנו – ולא כיוונתי כלל לדחות – הנני מתבונן בעבודתו שתבוא – במשך שנים עשר חדש הבאים – באנגליא בעלגיא שווייץ והולאנד. ואז יִוָדע – אם דבריו הנ”ל [= הנזכרים לעיל] ובכתבו שלפני זה – הם בנוגע לפועל, או שהוא מהסוג עליו אמרו חז”ל [= חכמינו זכרונם לברכה] שלאחרי הדבור יכול לומר: משטה אני בך.
Translation:
I am not a man of words. Therefore, talk only interests me insofar as it progresses thereafter into action.
Week after week, for six consecutive months, I’ve been observing your manner of work — despite you having promised me progress for years and despite knowing that I’m on site — and still nothing has come of it, so my doubts as to whether we shoul==d speak are well founded.
As we have spoken — and my intention was not at all to reject — I will observe your work to come in the following twelve months in England, Belgium, Switzerland and Holland,
By then it will become known if what you told me and what you write above are of practical implication, or they are of the category of which Chazal say that even after one says them, they are not binding because he can say “I was jesting with you…”
