Another answer of the Rebbe on the topic of college studies to a young woman who received a scholarship and was considering together with her mother to accept it:
ידועה דעתי בנוגע לקאלעדז [= אוניברסיטה] בכלל (שאפילו צדיק גמור מתפלל בכל יום בבוקר: אל תביאיני לידי נסיון) – ובזמן האחרון על אחת כמה וכמה. ופשוט אשר סקאלארשיפ [= מלגה] אינה הכשר כלל וכלל לדבר שאינו רצוי
ולפלא גדול: האומנם אין אמה יודעת כלל מהנעשה בקאלעדזש (שנתפרסם – והרבה יותר שמשתדלים שלא יתפרסם. וק”ל
Translation:
My opinion vis-à-vis college, in general, is famous: Even a Tzaddik gamur (=a perfectly righteous person) prays daily every morning: “Do not bring me to a test” and in recent times this request is all the more relevant.
Clearly, having received a scholarship is in no way whatsoever a hechsher to pursue something undesirable.
It is of great wonder to me: does your mother not know at all what goes on at college? (Which is publicly known – and much more about which efforts are taken that they not become public knowledge.) This is all very simple to comprehend.
