On Wednesday, a memorial at the Invalides memorial complex in Paris paid tribute to the 42 French citizens killed in the Simchas Torah attacks on Eretz Yisroel by Hamas and the three others still missing, believed to be held hostage.
The memorial was hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and was attended by the victims’ families, many of whom were brought to France on a special flight. Every French victim was represented at the ceremony by a photograph with his or her name. Also at the ceremony were government officials, representatives of the Israeli embassy in Paris and Rabbi Yosef Itschak Pevzner, Shliach and head of “Sinai Institutions”
In a solemn address, President Macron described the October 7 attack as “barbarism… which is fed by anti-Semitism” and vowed not to give in to “rampant and uninhibited anti-Semitism”. He also reiterated France’s commitment to fight “every day” for the “liberation” of the three French nationals still presumed hostages in Gaza. “Their empty chairs are here,” he said, referring to the 42 vacant chairs at the ceremony.
During the ceremony, Rabbi Pevzner met with and put on Teffilin with the victims’ families.
