Socialist Zohran Mamdani had a significant lead over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday night, leaving the young socialist upstart poised to land a stunning upset in a race that will be determined by a ranked-choice count.
A ranked-choice tabulation will decide the race’s outcome after neither Democrat got a clear majority in the vote. Mamdani, 33, a democratic socialist member of the state Assembly who made worrying anti-Israel statements, held a significant lead with about 90% of ballots counted. Mamdani was also ranked second on more ballots than Cuomo, narrowing Cuomo’s path to catch up.
As of Wednesday morning, Mamdani led with 43.5% of the vote, racking up 432,305 votes. Cuomo got 36.4% racking up 361,840 votes, followed by Brad Lander with 11.3% of the vote, with 112,349 votes. Adrienne Adams got just 40,953 votes or 4.1% and Scott Stringer got 16,387 votes 1.6%.
These votes reflect the first round of votes.
Cuomo, who was trying to make a comeback, conceded the contest less than two hours after the polls closed, saying he had called Mamdani to congratulate him.
“Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won,” Cuomo told supporters.
Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams skipped the primary. He’s running as an independent in the general election. Cuomo also has the option of running in the general election.
