One of kosher New York’s famous and breakthrough restaurants of the last 15 years, Basil NY Pizza & Wine Bar of Crown Heights opened in 2010 and is known as a trailblazer in the kosher world, behind the likes of numerous chefs that have gone on to rule the kosher restaurant scene.
The restaurant was featured in the NYTimes and others over the years, as an experiment to bring the Jewish and non-Jewish communities of Crown Heights together. It was the first of many innovative restaurants in the Crown Heights to show kosher diners what good quality food could be.
Over the years the restaurant ran into some controversies including the OK removing its Hashgacha for some time. It also boasted a who’s who of chefs, with numerous chefs that have gone on to rule the kosher restaurant scene, including Moses Wendel and Jose Soto.
The owners opened other eateries including a high-end bakery and a Meat restaurant.
The Crown Heights restaurant has been temporarily closed for a number of months. In February 2023, a fire broke out at the restaurant originating from a blocked vent in the wood-burning pizza oven.
Today they confirmed that they will not be reopening – Basil has permanently closed.
Modern, upscale dairy eateries today undeniably owe a lot to Basil paving that path.
