I am a teacher in a Chabad Mesivta and I noticed something that really bothered me: We all know that recently, in Eretz Yisroel and the USA, there were political elections. I saw that it consumed the time and passion of my students. I started wondering if that would be different if the talmidim — and Chassidim in general — were told by Rabbanim and Mashpiim told not to vote at all in the elections. What is the Rebbe’s approach to voting elections? Rabbi Gershon Avtzon answers in this week’s Chinuch and Moshiach column • Full Article
I am a teacher in a Chabad Cheder and I am in charge of the daily Shacharis minyan. I am challenged as to what is the best Chinuch approach to employ towards talmidim that come late to davening. Should I tell them, as the Shulchan Aruch says, to skip parts of davening so that they can daven Shmoneh Esreh with the minyan, or should I encourage them to daven the full davening? • Rabbi Gershon Avtzon answers in this week’s Chinuch and Moshiach column • Full Article
I am a teacher at a girls high school. Every so often, a girl will ask a really silly question (not even intending to be chutzpadik) and it really puts a damper on the entire atmosphere of the class. I was considering cutting down on the time allotted for questions and focus on just extending the lesson. Did the Rebbe ever write about this? • Rabbi Gershon Avtzon answers in this week’s Chinuch and Moshiach column • Full Article
When I was a bochur, I never came home on Shabbos Mevarchim and would spend the day in shul saying the entire Tehillim. I continued this custom after my wedding as well. Recently, some people have told me that this is not the right Chinuch approach as my kids are left without a father on Shabbos afternoon. I was wondering if the Rebbe ever addressed this particular Chinuch issue • Rabbi Gershon Avtzon answers in this week’s Chinuch and Moshiach column • Full Article
I am very impressed with the amount of knowledge that my children are learning and their intellectual skills that they are developing. I do not see an emphasis placed on basic derech eretz and I am told that these values are supposed to come from the home. Is that true or is the school supposed to partner with us in instilling these values? • Rabbi Gershon Avtzon answers in this week’s Chinuch and Moshiach column • Full Article
Question: Dear Rabbi Avtzon! You have explained the Rebbe’s approach to many different Chinuch-related questions and challenges. I have a more basic and fundamental question: Is the responsibility of parents to educate their children a mi’dOraisa and mi’dRabanan? • Rabbi Gershon Avtzon answers in this week’s Chinuch and Moshiach column • Full Article
I am a 770 Bochur that goes on the “Released Time” program and see first-hand the issues with public school education. I was wondering if the Rebbe ever openly wrote about the issues of public-school education • Rabbi Gershon Avtzon answers in this week’s Chinuch and Moshiach column • Full Article
Our son is in Yeshiva and has a hard time waking up in the morning and coming to seder. The way the Hanhala is dealing with it is by giving monetary knassim (fines) to my son. Besides the fact that it seems to be punishing us more than him, we find this idea to be counter-productive: Wouldn’t having to make up the material be much more productive? • Rabbi Gershon Avtzon answers in this week’s Chinuch and Moshiach column • Full Article
I was brought up in a regular Lubavitcher home. In my parents house, the boys all started wearing a Yarmulka after the Upshernish at three years old. I have a neighbor that insists that her son — a one-year-old — wear a Yarmulka. I’m wondering whether that’s an extreme position or is it something to be respected and emulated? • Rabbi Gershon Avtzon answers in this week’s Chinuch and Moshiach column • Full Article
I am a bochur in Yeshiva. I try to follow the seder and to use my time to learn and grow. I find that my learning is getting dry and I am missing real “cheshek” (passion) in my learning. I’m beginning to feel that perhaps full-day learning in Yeshiva is not for me. Before I act on these thoughts, I would like to hear if the Rebbe ever addressed this issue.
