In honor of the joyous day of Rosh Chodesh Kislev, the day that the Rebbe returned home for the first time after a major heart attack thirty-eight days prior during the Shemini Atzeres celebrations in 770 in 1977/5738, the Rebbe was magia four Maamorim.
These four Maamorim are available in a video Shiur taught by Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz, Shliach in Southwest Florida, here on Chabadinfo and Youtube.
Rosh Chodesh Kislev is a significant date in Chabad Chassidic history, celebrated as the day in 1977 when the Rebbe recovered from a serious heart attack suffered on Shemini Atzeres. This marked a turning point in his health and leadership.
The Rebbe’s heart attack occurred during hakafos on Shemini Atzeres in 5738 (1977). Despite medical advice, the Rebbe insisted on staying in 770 rather than being hospitalized. A makeshift hospital room was set up for his care.
After weeks of recovery, the Rebbe left his office-residence in 770 on Rosh Chodesh Kislev, symbolizing his return to public life. This event brought immense joy to Chassidim worldwide, who saw it as a miraculous recovery.
Annual Celebration: Rosh Chodesh Kislev has since been celebrated as a day of thanksgiving and renewed dedication to the Rebbe’s mission. Farbrengens (Chassidic gatherings) are held, focusing on themes of health, gratitude, and strengthening one’s connection to Torah and mitzvos.
Significance: The Rebbe’s recovery allowed him to continue his leadership, which included initiatives that transformed Jewish life globally. Rosh Chodesh Kislev is thus seen as a day to reflect on and recommit to the Rebbe’s teachings and vision.
Rosh Chodesh Kislev is an auspicious time for learning Chassidus, and several Chassidic discourses (maamarim) were Certified & Edited by the Rebbe in Honor of this special Day.
Suggested Practice:
Study in-depth: Select one of these maamarim for deeper study, perhaps at a farbrengen or with a study partner.
Apply to life: Reflect on how the teachings of the maamar can inspire personal growth and a renewed commitment to spreading light and joy, much as the Rebbe emphasized.
