We are deeply saddened to report the passing of Tzaddik halevi Nassofer, known as “Charlie Buttons,” a beloved resident of the Crown Heights community, who would entertain and bring joy to those around him. He passed away on 11 Iyar, 5785.

    He was 80 years old.

Charlie was born on 8 Tammuz, 5704, to his father, Izzy halevi Nassofer. His first name is ‘Tzadik’ and gave himself his nickname is ‘Charlie Buttons’ (‘Buttons’ after the Jewish-themed round pins that adorn his clothes).

When he lived in Manhattan, he met the Rebbe’s Shluchim, and started visiting Crown Heights frequently, and became one of the colorful figures in Beis Chayeinu. In his early years, as he got off the subway, he would meet the Rebbe on his way to 770 and turn to him and talk to him.

Over the years, Charlie was zoche to bring a smile to the Rebbe’s face and received many encouragements over the years, especially when he passed by dollars.

Once, during the Tanya distribution on Yud Tes Kislev 5751, Charlie received special acknowledgment from the Rebbe: a Yarmulke from the Rebbe. According to him, the Rebbe gave it to him because his Yarmulke was swept away while swimming in Long Island.

Charlie would entertain children and would bring added joy to the many Simchos he joined in the Shchuna. He was a regular at Murphy’s Shul in Crown Heights.

In recent years, as his health declined, Charlie spent his time in rehab centers in Brooklyn.

As He celebrated his eightieth birthday on the 1st of Tammuz, 5784, 770. On that occasion, he was given a large picture as a gift in which we see him passing by the Rebbe, and the Rebbe encouraging and smiling brightly at him.

He is survived by his two sisters.

The levaya will take place tomorrow, Friday, passing by 770-Beis Chayeinu at 11:00 am.
