With great sadness we regret to inform you of the passing of Rabbi Yosef Bentzion Raices, OB”M, a well-known Chossid and longtime member of the Crown Heights community. He passed away on Shabbos, Tes Vov Iyar. He was 91-years-old.
Rabbi Raices was born Tes Elul, in the year 5688, to his parents, Rabbi Shmuel Yitzchok and Alte Yehudis.
As a Bochur while learning in Crown Heights, he traveled for a period of time to Boston to do Merkaz Shlichus, with the Jewish students at the university.
While being a Melamed for many years in Oholei Torah and Lubavitch Yeshiva Ocean Parkway, he would always be dealing with Mivtzoim and spreading Chassidus.
For many years, Rabbi Raices would drive a bus turned van, turned Seforim store, spreading Chassidus, especially in the summer months across the different camps and bungalows upstate New York.
In addition to his many activities, he was also a board member of Kupas Rabbeinu.
Many letters of Chassidim and Mashpi’im of Crown Heights, especially related to matters of elections had his signature, as one of the prominent Mashpi’im of the community.
For over twenty years he would stand up by the Rebbe MH”M’s Farbrengen every Shabbos and share a portion of the Rebbe’s Sicha, followed by ‘Yechi’.
He is survived by his wife, Rifka, and children, Menachem Mendel – Postville, IA; Shalom Ber – Skokie, IL; Levi – Kharkov, Ukraine; and Chani Serebriansky – Toronto, Canada; as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
